Nyjah A. Golphin, 24, was charged with felony aggravated assault by vehicle, reckless endangerment, racing on highways, and several other motor vehicle offenses, Palmer Township Police said in a release on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
The charges stem from a head-on crash near Vanburen Road on Main Street in Palmer Township on Saturday, May 21, police said.
Emergency crews responded and found an unconscious man trapped in a vehicle that was on fire.
A follow-up investigation and examination of surveillance footage from several nearby businesses found that the Volkswagen involved in the crash had been street racing with another driver in the westbound lanes just before hitting an eastbound vehicle.
Golphin, of Easton, was identified as the racing driver, according to police.
He was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 10 and will be scheduled for a preliminary hearing through the District Court.
“This was an unfortunate yet horrific accident that could have been prevented if only the rules of the roadway would have been lawfully followed,” police said.
“Like most jurisdictions in the Lehigh Valley, Palmer Township’s vehicular traffic has grown in the last few years, so when this type of driving action occurs, it places everybody on the road in danger.”
